Unit deploys to Okinawa and given the task of taking a series of hills with steep cliffs, booby traps, and tunnels
Doss tests out the climb for his unit and summits a day before everyone else
Once the entire unit makes it to the top and is trying to organize, the Japanese counterattack and push Americans off the summit. At one point, the hill is occupied by only Japanese, Doss, and 70 wounded Americans
Doss lowers 70 Americans to safety
Doss is wounded
