We write about, and curate, World War II history on Tumblr. When freedom and democracy were in peril, an entire generation answered the call. It may be hard for us to imagine, but our grandparents and great-grandparents - when they were young like us - put aside their youth to save the world less than a lifetime ago. They still refuse to be called heroes. The least you can do is post a photo in their honor!

Day 43: May 18
Leg braces used by Franklin Roosevelt (Steel, leather) FDR could not stand without the support of leg braces like these. They were strapped to his legs and locked at the knee. These braces weigh approximately ten pounds. In order to appear to “walk” in public, Roosevelt used a cane and a strong companion’s arm to support his weight while he pitched his body forward. This required skill and considerable upper body strength, developed through practice and exercise.

    The Yalta Conference Cloak

The photos of the Big Three at the Yalta Conference are well-known, but have you ever looked closely at what FDR was wearing?

In contrast to the double-breasted coats worn by Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin, Franklin D. Roosevelt wore a distinctive wool and velvet cloak during his trip to the Crimea, Ukraine, in February 1945.

The garment is a U.S. Navy regulation officer’s boatcloak.  President Roosevelt’s was made at the Naval Clothing Depot at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in New York City in August 1942.  It is a standard officer’s boatcloak, ordered and unaltered for FDR’s use.

The cloak is designed to be worn during movement by a boat to protect the wearer from the cold and his clothing from the effects of spray. It opens at the front and is fitted with two frogs (knotted lengths of braided cord), which engage to secure the cloak closed. The relative ease with which such a cloak could be put on and taken off made wearing it an attractive alternative to a more conventional garment—especially for someone whose ease of movement was hampered by the effects of polio.

Roosevelt wore similar boatcloaks during other trips he made during his Presidency.  The image of FDR in these cloaks is one of the most enduring of the war years.

I noticed the cloak yesterday when another history blog posted photos from the conference. I thought it was cool but knowing the back story is even cooler!

Thirty-Second President: Franklin Roosevelt (1933-1945)
This picture shows “FDR and Fala, out for a ride”.
Fala was a famous Scottish Terrier, the beloved dog of U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt. One of the most famous presidential pets, Fala captured the attention of the public in the United States and followed Roosevelt everywhere, becoming part of Roosevelt’s public image. His White House antics were widely covered in the media and often referenced both by Roosevelt and his wife, Eleanor Roosevelt. Fala survived Roosevelt by seven years and was buried alongside him. A statue of him alongside Roosevelt is prominently featured in Washington, D.C.’s Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, the only presidential pet so honored.

In the seventeenth chapter of Saint Luke it is written 'the kingdom of God is within man.” Not one man, nor a group of men, but in all men. In you, the people. You the people have the power, the power to create machines, the power to create happiness. You the people have the power to make life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure. - Charlie Chaplin
