Declared a saint, the anti-Hitler activist beheaded by Nazis at age 25
The church canonised Alexander Schmorell for his involvement in the White Rose group, which vented its disgust of Hitler and the Nazi regime by writing pamphlets opposing the regime and condemning the treatment of Soviet citizens under German occupation.
Sainthood given to Nazi Resister
“We will not be silent. We are your bad conscience. The White Rose will not leave you in peace!” one of the leaflets said. The group’s activity was stopped by Nazi police in February 1943, and Shmorel was imprisoned and later put to death for his participation in the group.
Dialogue-driven ‘Sophie Scholl’ a heroic tale
The show is set during 1943 in Munich. It takes place during the last days of the White Rose underground movement in which college students secretly produced and distributed anti-Nazi and anti-war leaflets. A janitor spots Sophie (Julia Jentsch) and her brother Hans (Fabian Hinrichs) as the fliers are distributed outside a college classroom. The siblings are subsequently arrested.
